Valorisation at the NGI Genomics Centres

Although excellent research, as performed in the NGI Genomics Centres, is a prerequisite for valorisation, the best results are obtained when the valorisation strategy is aligned with the research strategy, the Centre’s organisation and sector-specific dynamics.

NGI has therefore made valorisation an essential and compulsory part of all NGI Genomics Centres and awarded them a valorisation budget.

The principle behind ascribing specific valorisation resources to each Centre is that it enables them to elevate results to a level that allows transfer or licensing to existing industry, within or outside the consortium. The Centres have also been given valorisation targets alongside their scientific targets.

The Centres use their valorisation budgets for creating awareness amongst researchers, scouting for research findings and where necessary protecting them with patents, and a certain amount of work related to proof-of-concept or claim substantiation. The Centres’ Valorisation Manager coordinates the valorisation activities that are executed by the TTOs involved in the Centres.

NGI Valorisation Award

To reward the Centres’ valorisation performance, NGI has introduced an annual €1m Valorisation Award for the Centre that has performed best according to the annual theme.
