Study on bone mineral density identifies thirteen new loci

Bone mineral density (BMD) is an important clinical measure for the assessment of osteoporosis, a disease in which bone mass and bone strength are reduced and risk of bone fracture is increased.

Worldwide, millions of people, predominantly women, are affected.  Rivadeneira (Netherlands Consortium for Healthy Ageing) and colleagues from the FP7 GEFOS programme on osteoporosis identified 13 new genetic loci that are associated with BMD.

Society may benefit from this through the development of new compounds for osteoporosis treatment in the near future.
