On 29 April 2010, Gert-Jan van Ommen, director of the Centre for Medical Systems Biology was decorated as a Knight in the Order of the Netherlands Lion.
As a researcher, he was a prominent contributor to the development of a therapy against Duchenne muscular dystrophy, which is currently in the trial phase. No wonder therefore, that the nomination for decoration was fully supported by the Duchenne Parent Project foundation. Moreover, he has made an important contribution to the broader public knowledge of genetics and the ethical discussion on this subject.
