In a recent publication in Molecular Immunology, VIRGO Consortium researchers from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Utrecht University used a transcriptomics approach to investigate the effect of age on the early host response to avian influenza virus (bird flu).

Findings suggest that the strength of virus-induced host responses is affected by maturation of the respiratory immune system. However, expression of most cellular host factors that block viral replication by interacting with viral factors appeared to be independent of age.
