Measurements of red blood cells (erythrocytes) are important clinical traits and can indicate various hematological disorders. In a recent Nature Genetics paper, the CHARGE consortium - in which the Netherlands Consortium for Healthy Ageing (NCHA) participates - carried out a genome-wide analysis in 24,167 individuals of European ancestry to search for genetic determinants of erythrocyte traits. This study identified 23 gene loci significantly associated with these traits, including loci associated with blood pressure and hypertension.
