On 16 June, the first Designers & Artists 4 Genomics expo opened in Naturalis.
On display: bulletproof skin, a new life form that produces biofuel from plastic, and worms performing an opera. The artists use living materials obtained from genomics institutes that study the genes of humans, animals, plants and micro-organisms.
In December 2010, these three projects won the Designers & Artists 4 Genomics Award (DA4GA). This was the first Dutch competition that brought together design and life sciences, with the objective of promoting Bio-Art and making the diversity of genomic research visible. DA4GA was so successful that it will be succeeded by a second competition in 2011.
In this second round, 22 new ideas have been received so far. The 2011 winners will be announced on 8 December 2011 in Naturalis, and will each be awarded 25,000 euro to implement their projects.
Designers & Artists 4 Genomics is an initiative of the Netherlands Genomics Initiative and the Waag Society. The awards were funded by the Centre for Society and Genomics and are presented in Naturalis.
