CGC investigator Jan Hoeijmakers receives the first KNAW Professor Award

The KNAW Professor Award is a one million euro prize for scientific research and is meant as a lifetime achievement award for excellent researchers that have shown to be at the absolute top of their research field.

Jan Hoeijmakers of the Cancer Genomics Centre and the Netherlands Toxicogenomics Centre receives the award for his innovative research in the field of cancer and ageing.

He is professor of genetics at the Erasmus MC and an expert in the world on DNA-repair. He studied how proteins detect damage in our DNA, remove the damaged DNA and subsequently add new DNA, and demonstrated the importance of this process for cancer prevention and ageing.
