The Netherlands Consortium for Systems Biology held its kick-off symposium in Noordwijkerhout on October 15-16. It drew an audience of around 125, consisting of scientists, policy makers and press. The international speakers, Denis Noble, Douglas Kell, and Béla Novák, put their marks on this event by highlighting successes achieved and challenges still looming. Philosopher Hub Zwart then shone light from a different angle on the complexities of life.
