Every year, 16,000 people in the Netherlands die of acute heart failure. Because this can be a hereditary condition, family of the deceased should be notified about the illness. They can be examined and if necessary, get started on preventive medication.
Researchers from the Centre for Society and Genomics Isa Houwink and Martina Cornel, VUmc, added this recommendation to the revised GP guidelines for cardiovascular disease, which will be published later this year.
