Researchers from the Forensic Genomic Consortium Netherlands (FGCN) have discovered a way of distinguishing between generations
of male relatives in forensic research.
To date, so-called Y-chromosome markers (Y-STRs) could only be used to identify groups of male relatives. The researchers found a set of Y-STR markers that could be used to identify individual men within these groups. This is of vital importance, for example in forensic investigations into sexual offences.
The researchers published their findings in the leading scientific journal The American Journal of Human Genetics.
