Imagine in Surinam

In 2006, high school students from ‘t Atrium in Amersfoort won the Imagine school competition.

Together with Bob Ursem, the scientific director of the Botanical Garden of Delft University of Technology, they developed a plan to provide the Surinam economy with a new and unconventional source of income:
the red seeds of the Achiote tree. These seeds can be used as
a natural red colouring agent in food and medicine production,
dye development, and several other applications. Last August,
the students and Bob left for Paramaribo to meet the local project partners. The Foundation Imagine Life Sciences, a spin-off of
the Kluyver Centre, donated a grant of € 25,000.
