A few years ago, the NGI consortia CSG, CBSG, CGC, Kluyver Centre, CMSB and NBIC together developed ‘Mobile DNA labs’ offering practical lessons on genomics to Dutch high school pupils. On March 13th, these mobile labs won the Zilveren Zandloper Education Award 2008, an initiative of Stichting Biotechnologie Nederland, awarded every two years for innovative contributions to biotechnology education.
The mobile labs visit schools in order to bridge the gap between science and education. Students are introduced to the latest scientific insights and to societal aspects of DNA. Topics cover items such as tumour profiling, bioinformatics or plant research.
The labs already met with over 30,000 students, thus improving interaction between genomics and society.
