Genomics Centres, valorisation, society and talent are the mainstays of the NGI strategy.
Genomics Centres
At the heart of the NGI Genomics Centres is excellent research that aims to provide groundbreaking new knowledge.
The Centre for BioSystems Genomics (CBSG), the Cancer Genomics Centre (CGC) and the Kluyver Centre for Genomics of Industrial Fermentation will continue their programmes for another five years. CGC is awarded additional funding based on its excellent results during the first period. Two new NGI Genomics Centres have been established: the Forensic Genomics Consortium and the Netherlands Toxicogenomics Centre. The Centre for Medical Systems Biology (CMSB) will receive funding for valorisation of its research results and for embedding its programmes in participating universities. For the four Innovative Clusters, the term of which ends in 2009, budget has been reserved to continue excellent elements and to enable the valorisation of promising results. Finally, NGI also reserves resources for seizing new opportunities in the future and establishing one or more additional Genomics Centres.
Funds have been reserved for the existing Netherlands Proteomics Centre (NPC) and Netherlands Bioinformatics Centre (NBIC) to continue their activities after 2009, when their first phase ends. Two new infrastructure initiatives have been established, one focusing on metabolomics (Netherlands Metabolomics Centre) and one on systems biology (Netherlands Systems Biology Consortium).

Valorisation
The budget for valorisation has been drastically increased, which underlines NGI’s commitment to creating tangible value from research results. The budget will be used to strengthen the local valorisation infrastructure within the Genomics Centres, to expand and professionalise the network of valorisation managers and to coordinate those activities within NGI that facilitate valorisation within the Genomics Centres.

Society
Focus on the societal aspects of genomics is an integral element of the NGI strategy and is underscored by the further development of the Centre for Society and Genomics (CSG). In the coming years, CSG will bring together – in close collaboration with the NGI Genomics Centres – all research on societal aspects of genomics and all activities relating to public communication and education.

Talent
The successful Horizon programme will be continued and its budget raised to allow more talented young researchers to pursue their own creative ideas - thereby creating a breeding ground for the genomics research leaders of tomorrow.
