Researchers from the Forensic Genomics Consortium Netherlands together with colleagues from Poland recently demonstrated that their new method of establishing hair and eye colour from modern forensic samples can also be used to identify details from ancient human remains. They published their results in the open access journal Investigative Genetics.

Hair and eye colour of an unknown perpetrator can now be estimated from his or her DNA left behind at the crime scene. Erasmus MC scientists, in collaboration with their Polish and Greek colleagues, have developed the first DNA test system for hair colour prediction that also allows determination of most likely eye colour.

Big data volumes analysed in the cloud

Netherlands Bioinformatics Centre

Collaboration between NBIC and the e-BioGrid team resulted in a new service: NBIC Galaxy on Cloud. Galaxy is an open, web-based platform for data intensive biomedical research. The migration of Galaxy to the cloud allows end-users to run their analysis on the BiG Grid High Performance Computing (HPC) cloud at SARA. The Dutch cloud version of Galaxy enables processing of big data volumes and the high speed network connection provides rapid data.
