Genomics the key to a safer world
Safety deserves our ceaseless attention: the safety of our food,
our environment and the products we use, the safety of our drugs,
the chemicals we are exposed to and the society we live in. Safety can never be taken for granted. Some risks cannot be met unless we find an innovative approach. Also, new risks arise. Increasing mobility for instance causes a wider and faster spread of viruses. And bioterrorism calls fro new methods of investigation and control.
Genomics can play an important role in understanding the origins of dangers and risks, both new and old, while at the same time offering clues on how to find solutions and develop tools for better safety assessment and prevention. Forensic genomics can improve the crime-solving rate. Toxicogenomics will revolutionise toxicity testing.
