Metabolic processes are the core of physiology. Researchers across the world recognise the need to study these metabolic processes in order to understand biological systems. Research demands for the development of metabolomics technologies have seen a dramatic rise.
The Netherlands Metabolomics Centre (NMC) brings together the knowledge and expertise of the Dutch genomics and life sciences community to develop these technologies.
The mission of NMC is the creation of a world-class metabolomics knowledge infrastructure to improve personal health and the quality of life. NMC will serve as a focal point for communication and education concerning the potential and benefits of metabolomics to science and
society. By forming direct links with the existing NGI Genomics Centres, NMC ensures maximum transfer of technologies to end-user biologists.
NMC concentrates its research efforts on developing technologies relevant to the most pressing biological problems in a variety of fields, such as human health care, plant and nutrition science.
NMC’s major deliverables are:
- Making metabolomics an indispensable tool for life sciences and industrial research.
- Validated & standardised methods for analysing and identifying thousands of metabolites in various types of samples.
- Tools to identify diagnostic and mechanistic information regarding
disease risk, progression and response to pharmacological and/or nutritional treatment.
- Proof-of-concept studies demonstrating the power of metabolomics approaches.
- Enabling personalised health strategies for the benefit of the individual and society.
- Trained scientists using and disseminating metabolics to the life sciences research community.
